Something genuinely interesting landed in the UK miles world recently - and it's the kind of story that's worth sitting down with a coffee for.
For the first time ever, there is a UK payment card that earns Star Alliance miles directly. United Airlines launched its UK debit card in March 2026, and just last week the programme got a significant shake-up that makes the card more compelling for the right type of collector. But - and this is a big but - it is not necessarily the best card for most UK readers. Let's dig into the maths.
Before we get into it though - if you want to check out all our coverage on UK credit cards and the Membership Rewards programme, we've got dedicated pages for both that are well worth bookmarking.

✈️ The UK's First Star Alliance Card - A Game Changer or Niche Product?
Star Alliance is the world's largest airline alliance with 26 member airlines serving 1,500 airports. We're talking Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Air Canada, United, ANA, Swiss... the list goes on. Until now, there was no UK card that let you earn Star Alliance miles directly. That just changed.
The United Airlines Debit Card launched in the UK in March 2026. The headline numbers: up to 15,000 miles sign-up bonus, up to 2,500 Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) per year towards United elite status, and a 0.99% foreign exchange fee - which is genuinely excellent compared to the 2.99% you'll pay on most other travel cards. The annual fee is £175.
In April 2026, United also shook up its MileagePlus programme in a way that makes this card significantly more valuable for loyalists. Card holders now earn an extra 3 miles per $1 when flying United, get a 10% mileage reduction on United redemptions, and access to better award availability. If you fly United regularly from the UK and care about MileagePlus status, this card is a no-brainer. Full stop.
But What If You're Not a United Loyalist?
Here's where it gets more nuanced. The £175 annual fee is steep, and while the FX rate is excellent, the earning rate on everyday UK spending is lower than rival options. For casual Star Alliance collectors - people who want to top up an Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, or Turkish Airlines account without flying those carriers regularly - there are better routes.
Let's break down the three main alternatives for UK collectors:
Option 1 - Amex Membership Rewards: Transfer points directly to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer at a rate of 3 Membership Rewards points = 2 KrisFlyer miles. The Amex Gold card currently offers 40,000 points on sign-up (until 26th May 2026), which converts to roughly 26,666 KrisFlyer miles. That's a solid start for a card that's free in year one.
Option 2 - Marriott Bonvoy cards: The most versatile option. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer to 14 Star Alliance airlines including Singapore Airlines, Air Canada, Turkish Airlines, United, ANA, Avianca, Ethiopian Airlines, and more. The transfer rate is 3:1 (or 3:1.25 if you convert 60,000 points at once). United gets a preferential 2:1 rate at 60,000 points. Three UK cards earn Bonvoy points - an Amex credit card and two debit cards.
Option 3 - HSBC Premier: Good earning rates (up to 1.5 miles per £1 on the paid card) for Singapore Airlines and Air India. However, you need a HSBC Premier current account to qualify - and that comes with tough income and savings requirements. Worth knowing about, but out of reach for many.
The maths on the Amex Gold right now is hard to argue with. 40,000 Membership Rewards points at the current sign-up bonus converts to 26,666 Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer miles - enough for a return Economy redemption to destinations within Asia. At roughly 1p per point equivalent, that's £400 worth of value from the sign-up alone, on a card that's free for the first year. You can check your eligibility for Amex cards using our Amex welcome bonus eligibility tool before applying.
One notable gap in the market: Lufthansa Miles & More - which covers Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, and now ITA Airways (who joined Star Alliance on 1st April 2026) - has no UK card earning option at all. That's a big hole given how popular these carriers are for UK travellers flying into Europe and beyond.

🏨 Hyatt Points Sale Ending TOMORROW - Here's Whether It's Worth It
This one is genuinely time-sensitive. The World of Hyatt 20% points discount ends tomorrow, Tuesday 7th April. It's the first offer of the year, meaning this is the first sale since your annual purchase limit reset - which matters if you've been holding off.
A 20% discount is mathematically equivalent to a 25% bonus - so you're effectively getting 1.25 points for every 1 you pay for. At the discounted rate, Hyatt points work out at approximately 2.08 cents per point (roughly 1.6p). Whether that's good value depends entirely on what you're planning to redeem for.
Heads up: this only makes sense if you have a specific redemption in mind. Buying points speculatively is rarely a good strategy - especially with Hyatt's award chart changing in May 2026, when the current three-tier pricing (Off-peak, Standard, Peak) expands to five tiers (Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper, Top). That could push some premium properties significantly higher in points cost.
If you've been eyeing a Hyatt stay and you're just a few thousand points short, tomorrow is the day to top up. Our Award Travel Finder newsletter tracks Hyatt availability daily if you want to check what's bookable before committing.
🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer is 🔵 Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. It's the only Star Alliance airline that is a direct Amex Membership Rewards transfer partner in the UK. You transfer at a rate of 3 Membership Rewards points to 2 KrisFlyer miles. No other Star Alliance carrier (not Lufthansa, Turkish, or Aeroplan) can be reached directly from Amex UK. Marriott Bonvoy is your best bet for broader Star Alliance coverage.
