Emirates just launched a brand new rail booking platform - and it is genuinely one of the most broken products I have seen come out of a major airline loyalty programme. Wrong departure times, no First Class option, and prices marked up over 10% compared to booking direct. Here is exactly what went wrong.

Before we get into the carnage - a quick question related to today's hero story:

When you redeem Emirates Skywards miles for rail tickets via Skywards Rail, approximately how many pence per mile do you get (before accounting for the platform's price markup)?

Emirates has followed Virgin Red's lead and launched its own rail booking platform at skywardsrail.com. The concept is solid - book European rail tickets and earn or redeem Skywards miles. Coverage looks impressive on paper: over 40 major rail operators across 12 countries, including Eurostar, Deutsche Bahn, SNCF, Trenitalia, Renfe and all UK operators including Heathrow Express.

But then you actually try to use it.

The most fundamental problem - and this really is extraordinary for a rail ticketing platform - is that it adds an hour to every departure time it displays. Search for a noon train from London Kings Cross to York, and it shows you a 1pm train. That 1pm train is actually the noon service. The platform is consistently showing departure times one hour later than they really are.

That alone is disqualifying. But there's more.

The platform only shows two trains per search. There's no forward/backward button to browse earlier or later options - you have to start a fresh search each time. Trains are sorted by price rather than departure time, which is not standard practice anywhere. And you cannot book First Class - the option simply doesn't exist in the search interface.

Then there's the pricing. On the London Kings Cross to York route, Skywards Rail was consistently charging over 10% more than the LNER direct price. A ticket priced at £51.40 on LNER's own app showed as £57.95 on Skywards Rail. That £6.55 premium disappears directly into the platform's margin.

Now let's look at the miles redemption value. Using 9,156 Skywards miles to offset that £57.95 ticket gives you around 0.63p per mile. That sounds reasonable for a non-flight redemption. But once you strip out the 10%+ markup and compare to the real direct price, the effective value drops to around 0.56p per Skywards mile. That is before you consider that cash-paying customers are being overcharged for no benefit at all.

And bizarrely, the platform doesn't even show you how many miles you'd earn if you simply paid cash - at least not before the payment screen.

Small Luxury Hotels of the World has launched a new offer with American Express - and it's the first SLH cashback deal we've seen in well over a year. If you have an eligible Amex card, you can receive £100 cashback on a spend of £300 or more at participating SLH hotels worldwide.

Here's why this is particularly interesting for points collectors: SLH properties are bookable through the World of Hyatt programme, meaning you can earn Hyatt points on your stay. But if you book direct with the hotel and pay with Amex, you can stack that £100 cashback on top of your standard card earning. Cumulative spend counts, so you don't need to drop £300 in a single transaction if the hotel structures billing across multiple nights.

Most people collecting Virgin Points are laser-focused on flights - which is completely the right instinct most of the time. But there's a surprisingly good non-flight use of Virgin Points that doesn't get nearly enough attention: the Virgin Red Room at the O2 arena in London.

The Virgin Red Room is a private suite inside the O2 that can be booked for almost any show using Virgin Points. The whole suite books as a single unit, directly through Virgin Red. At 40,000 Virgin Points per booking, it's not a casual redemption - but as a group experience for a big event, the maths can work out surprisingly well.

At roughly 0.8-1p per Virgin Point (our estimate), 40,000 points represents around £320-£400 of value. Whether that stacks up against private suite pricing at the O2 depends on the show, but for readers who have Virgin Points sitting idle and no imminent flight redemption planned, it's worth knowing this option exists. Heads up: availability depends entirely on what's on at the O2, and popular shows will go fast. This is genuinely more of an experience redemption than a value play - but sometimes that's exactly what you need to keep the hobby fun.

IHG has launched a 30% off Destination Deals sale covering stays at select European and Chinese properties. Travel window runs from 31st July through 13th September 2026, and you must book by this Sunday, 2nd August to lock in the discount.

The good news: this rate is not prepaid, and you can cancel without a fee as long as you do so at least 7 days before your stay. That makes it a low-risk way to hold a discounted summer booking while you finalise plans. IHG properties in Europe range from Holiday Inn Express to InterContinental, so there's plenty of scope to use One Rewards points alongside a discounted rate if you want to top up a stay.

Worth checking if you have any European travel on the cards between now and mid-September - even a one-night stopover can make this worthwhile.

Turkish Airlines is offering 20% off economy class return fares for travel between 1st September and 30th November 2026. Use promo code TIME2FLY when booking - but this needs to be done by this Sunday, 3rd August.

Warning: several routes are excluded, including flights to Russia, Australia, Japan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and a handful of others. If you're looking at Istanbul, European connections, or many African and Middle Eastern routes, it should apply. Turkish Airlines flies out of London Heathrow and Manchester, and their long-haul economy product is genuinely good value even before a 20% reduction.

This is a short booking window, so don't sit on it. Check the Turkish Airlines website directly and apply the code at checkout to confirm the discount before completing your booking.

The answer was 🟡 0.6p per mile - specifically around 0.63p per Skywards mile when redeeming against a Skywards Rail ticket. But as we covered above, once you factor in the 10%+ markup the platform adds over the direct booking price, the real effective value drops to around 0.56p per mile. For context, Skywards miles are generally valued at around 1p each for flight redemptions - so rail is already a step down, and the markup makes it worse.
