Qatar Airways has quietly introduced new eligibility rules that affect anyone using Avios to book reward flights for travelling companions. Effective immediately, Privilege Club members must meet two conditions before they can book Avios seats for anyone other than themselves - and for frequent travellers who book for family or friends, these changes could be a real headache.
What Qatar Airways has changed for Avios bookings
Until recently, if you had Avios sitting in your Qatar Privilege Club account (or linked from British Airways), you could use them to book reward seats for whichever passengers you chose. That flexibility has now been curtailed. Qatar has introduced two new requirements that must both be satisfied before you can book Avios redemptions for other people:
Your Privilege Club account must be at least 30 days old.
You must have credited at least one qualifying flight to your Privilege Club account - operated by Qatar Airways or a partner airline - or made a transaction on a Qatar Airways co-branded credit card (note: no such card exists in the UK).
If you only ever book for yourself, nothing has changed - these rules only kick in when you want to use your Avios balance to cover other passengers on the same booking.
The 30-day account rule: manageable but annoying
The first restriction - requiring your Privilege Club account to be at least 30 days old - is straightforward enough to work around. If you do not already have a Privilege Club account, create one now. It is free to join, and once your account is 30 days old you will clear that hurdle. Even if you have no immediate plans to redeem Qatar Avios, setting up the account today gives you a running start.
Remember, you can link your BA Executive Club and Qatar Privilege Club accounts - once linked, you can move Avios between them instantly and for free. This means any Avios balance you already hold with BA is accessible via Qatar, subject to meeting the new eligibility criteria.
The flight credit requirement: the bigger obstacle for UK travellers
The second rule is trickier. You need to have credited at least one qualifying flight to your Privilege Club account. For UK-based travellers, the co-branded credit card route does not apply (there is no Qatar Airways credit card available in the UK). That means you need to credit an actual flight.
The workaround? Crediting even a one-way domestic British Airways fare in the lowest booking class to your Privilege Club account would technically satisfy the requirement - though this is far from ideal if you are trying to accumulate BA tier points towards Gold or Silver status, since splitting earning between programmes dilutes your BA status progress.
Qatar has acknowledged that some of these changes are driven by a rise in points fraud, which explains the 30-day rule. The flight credit requirement, however, is harder to justify for customers who have been loyal Avios earners through BA but simply want to use those points on Qatar metal.
How to book Avios on Qatar Airways: two routes explained
Once you meet the eligibility conditions, there are two ways to book Qatar reward flights with Avios. Understanding the difference is important - each has genuine advantages depending on your situation.
Option 1: Book via the Qatar Airways website
Log in to your Privilege Club account, ensure your BA Club account is linked, then search for flights and tick the 'Book using Avios' option. If your Avios are still in your BA account, transfer them to Qatar before booking (or use the combined balance if offered at checkout), then pay the Avios plus any applicable taxes and fees.
Option 2: Book via the British Airways website
Log in to your BA Club account, go to 'Book a flight with Avios', search for Qatar Airways routes, and select the available reward seats. This route lets you draw from a BA Household Account balance, which can be useful if your Avios are spread across multiple household members.
There are meaningful differences between the two routes that affect which is better for your specific booking. Use our Qatar Avios Award Flight Finder to check availability across both channels before committing.
Qatar releases award seats 360 days in advance vs. 355 days on the BA site - for popular routes like Australia, booking directly via Qatar can give you a five-day head start.
BA has a more generous rebooking policy in the event of disruptions or cancellations.
BA Household Account members can pool Avios when booking through BA. Via Qatar, one person must hold the full balance needed.
Award flights booked through Qatar can be changed or cancelled up to three hours before departure (the fee is $25 up to 24 hours before, or $100 between three and 24 hours before, for those without status). BA requires 24 hours' notice.
Qatar often releases more Business Class and Qsuite award seats through its own site - including seats not visible on BA.
Flexi Awards (a higher-cost option when standard seats are sold out) are only available when booking directly through Qatar, not via BA.
Setting up My List and Family & Friends on Qatar
Once you meet both eligibility conditions, you can add up to 10 other people to book redemptions for - split across two features:
My List allows you to add up to four adults (18+) using their membership number and last name, email address, or an invitation link. Each person must stay on the list for at least six months before you can remove or replace them.
Family & Friends works more like the BA Household Account but with important caveats: those you add cannot already have their own Privilege Club account, and they cannot spend the Avios themselves - only the account holder who set up the group can redeem them. You can add up to six people (including children over two years old) via your Profile dashboard. The same six-month lock-in period applies before you can make changes.
Things to watch: who these rules hurt most
Solo travellers are entirely unaffected by this change. The restrictions only apply when booking Avios seats for someone else on the same booking - so if you and your travel partner each book your own seats separately using your respective Avios balances, the new rules do not apply to you.
The people most affected are those who hold a large Avios balance and regularly book for family or friends - particularly new Privilege Club members who have not yet credited a flight. The co-branded card route that exists in other markets is simply not available in the UK, leaving the flight credit as the only path to compliance.
If you are wondering what your Qatar Avios redemptions are actually worth in pound terms, our Qatar Avios & Qpoints Calculator can help you sense-check whether a specific redemption represents good value before you transfer any points across.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still book Avios flights on Qatar through British Airways?
Yes - booking via the BA website is unaffected by Qatar's new restrictions. You log in to your BA Club account, search Qatar routes, and pay Avios as normal. The new eligibility rules only apply when booking through the Qatar Privilege Club site.
Do the new Qatar Privilege Club rules affect solo travellers?
No. If you are only ever booking for yourself, nothing has changed. The 30-day account age and flight credit requirements only apply when you want to book Avios seats for other passengers.
How do I link my BA Avios and Qatar Privilege Club accounts?
You need a free Qatar Privilege Club account in the same name as your BA Executive Club account. Once both accounts exist, you can link them via the Qatar website. After linking, Avios can be moved between the two accounts instantly and at no cost.
What is a Qatar Flexi Award and is it worth it?
A Flexi Award is a reward seat option available through Qatar's own site when standard award availability is sold out. It costs double the Avios of a standard award seat, though the cash taxes and fees stay the same. It is generally only worth considering if the route or dates are not available at standard pricing and you have the Avios to spare.
The bottom line
Qatar's new Avios booking rules are a meaningful change for anyone who books group redemptions, but they are not insurmountable. The key action right now: create a free Qatar Privilege Club account if you do not already have one and link it to your BA account - the 30-day clock starts ticking from the moment the account is created. The flight credit requirement is the harder hurdle for UK travellers, given there is no Qatar co-branded card available here, but crediting any qualifying flight to your Privilege Club account will clear it.
Solo travellers and those booking only for themselves can ignore the new rules entirely. For everyone else, getting your account and My List or Family & Friends set up now - before you actually need them - is the sensible move.
