The American Express Platinum Card in the UK is now offering 80,000 Membership Rewards points plus a £150 Selfridges eGift card when you spend £6,000 in your first three months. Those points convert 1:1 into 80,000 Avios, making it the biggest sign-up bonus on any UK personal travel card, and the offer runs until 12 January 2027.

What is the new Amex Platinum welcome offer?

The standard Platinum bonus of 50,000 points was already strong. For a limited time, American Express has lifted it to 80,000 Membership Rewards points and added a £150 Selfridges eGift card, which can be spent online or in store.

  • Bonus: 80,000 Membership Rewards points, which convert to 80,000 Avios or 80,000 Virgin Points

  • Extra: £150 Selfridges eGift card, valid for two years from issue

  • Spend target: £6,000 within three months of your application being approved (the annual fee does not count)

  • Annual fee: £650, with a pro-rata refund if you cancel

  • Offer ends: 12 January 2027

The clock starts when your application is approved, and you cannot extend it by delaying activation. The Selfridges eGift card arrives by email and can take up to eight weeks after the three-month period ends, although it is likely to be triggered once you hit the spend target.

The eGift card cannot be used over the phone or by post, cannot buy other gift cards, and is excluded at the Apple concession in the London store, Yo! Sushi, Jenki and the cinema. Other restaurant restrictions apply.

How much is 80,000 Amex points worth in pounds?

At a valuation of 1p per point when transferred to airline miles, 80,000 Membership Rewards points are worth roughly £800. Even in the worst-case scenario, converting to Nectar points to spend at Sainsbury's or Argos, they are worth around £400.

Add the £150 Selfridges eGift card and the first-year dining credits and the numbers get bigger. You receive £200 of UK dining credit and £200 of international dining credit each year, split into two £100 halves. In your first 12 months you get three of each £100 credit: one to use by 31 December 2026, one for January to June 2027 and one for July 2027 up to your card anniversary.

  • 80,000 points as Avios: roughly £800 in flight value at 1p each

  • £150 Selfridges eGift card: £150 of spending power

  • £400 of dining credit across the UK and international schemes (if you use it)

  • Total headline value before any other benefits: well over £1,000 against a £650 fee

Who qualifies for the Amex Platinum bonus?

You will not receive the bonus if you have held a personal Platinum, Gold or Green American Express card, or The American Express Rewards Credit Card, in the 24 months before you apply. Only personal cards count towards this rule.

You will still qualify if you hold a British Airways, Nectar, Marriott Bonvoy or Platinum Cashback American Express card. You also qualify if you are only a supplementary cardholder on someone else's Gold or Platinum account, because Amex treats that card as belonging to the primary cardholder. Corporate and Business Amex cards that earn Membership Rewards points do not disqualify you either.

Not sure where you stand? Our Amex welcome bonus eligibility tool walks you through the rules in a minute or two.

To hit £6,000 in three months, plan around genuine upcoming spending: a holiday, home improvements, annual insurance premiums or tax bills if you can pay by card. Never spend money you would not otherwise spend just to chase points.

Which Amex Platinum benefits are worth using?

The sign-up bonus alone can justify a short trial, but the card's long-term value depends entirely on how you travel. The main benefits include:

  • Full travel insurance for you and your family if you are under 70, plus one extra family group via a supplementary card

  • Car hire insurance

  • Priority Pass lounge access for you and your main supplementary cardholder, each with a guest, plus Amex Centurion lounges including Heathrow Terminal 3

  • Hotel status: Gold in ALL Accor, Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy, Premium in Radisson Rewards, Gold in MeliaRewards

  • Eurostar lounge access in London, Brussels and Paris whatever your class of travel

  • Fine Hotels & Resorts benefits, including guaranteed 4pm check-out

  • Free digital subscription to The Times and Sunday Times, plus new lululemon, Oura and Calm perks

Earning is modest at 1 Membership Rewards point per £1, or 2 points per £1 on Amex Travel bookings paid online. Many cardholders put everyday spend on other cards and treat Platinum as a benefits card.

What are the catches with the Amex Platinum offer?
  • The £650 annual fee is steep, and the representative APR is 685.3% variable including the fee (29.1% p.a. variable on purchases)

  • You must spend £6,000 in three months, which not everyone can do without changing habits

  • The eGift card has restrictions and can take up to eight weeks after the three-month window to arrive

  • Priority Pass visits will be capped from January 2028, although few people are expected to hit the limit

  • Points can only be transferred to accounts in the name of the main cardholder

  • You may see an even higher geotargeted offer when you click through, so check the final terms before applying

The risk is reduced by the pro-rata fee refund if you cancel. Trying the card for a few months is relatively low cost, provided you pay your balance in full each month and are not tempted to carry debt on the card.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the Amex Platinum bonus if I have a British Airways Amex card?

Yes. Holding a British Airways, Nectar, Marriott Bonvoy or Platinum Cashback American Express card does not disqualify you from the 80,000-point bonus and £150 Selfridges eGift card.

How many Avios do 80,000 Amex points convert to?

Membership Rewards points transfer to Avios at 1:1, so 80,000 points become 80,000 Avios. They also convert 1:1 to Virgin Points, Flying Blue, Asia Miles, Delta, Qantas and SAS miles.

Can I cancel the Amex Platinum and get a refund?

Yes. You can cancel at any point and receive a pro-rata refund of the £650 annual fee, which makes a short trial relatively low risk.

When does the Amex Platinum 80,000 points offer end?

The enhanced offer runs until 12 January 2027, so there is plenty of time to plan your £6,000 of spend.

The bottom line

If you qualify, can comfortably spend £6,000 in three months and will use at least some of the travel and dining benefits, this is about as good as the Platinum Card welcome offer gets. The points alone are worth £400 to £800, the Selfridges card adds £150, and the pro-rata refund limits the downside. The offer ends 12 January 2027, so you have time to line up the spend before applying.
