Finnair Plus is selling Avios at a 50% discount when you buy 85,000 or more, which works out at as little as 0.79p per Avios in the best case. That is a far better price than any recent British Airways promotion, and the offer runs until 16th November. The Avios can be moved into your BA Club account afterwards, so you do not need to be a Finnair flyer to benefit.
How does the Finnair Plus Avios discount work?
Finnair Plus lets members buy Avios directly, and this promotion cuts the price rather than adding a bonus. A 50% discount is the same as a 100% bonus, which is why it beats the usual 30%, 40% or 50% bonus offers you see from BA itself. The discount is tiered by how many Avios you buy:
5,000 to 19,000 Avios: 30% discount
20,000 to 49,000 Avios: 35% discount
50,000 to 84,000 Avios: 40% discount
85,000+ Avios: 50% discount
Annual purchase limits have been reset, so everyone can buy up to the 200,000 Avios maximum, even if they have already bought this year
The Avios are credited to a Finnair Plus account. To use them with British Airways you need to link your BA Executive Club and Finnair Plus accounts, then move them across.
What does 200,000 Avios cost, and what is the Yen trick?
At the top end, 200,000 Avios costs 2,100 euros with the 50% discount applied. That is roughly £1,752, or about 0.88p per Avios. If you do not see 2,100 euros, move 50 Avios into your Finnair Plus account first.
Finnair lets you change the currency on its buy points page, and paying in a different currency can lower the price. When the offer launched, Japanese Yen was cheapest at 333,400 Yen for 200,000 Avios, roughly £1,575, or just 0.79p per Avios. However, Finnair has since raised the Yen price sharply, so US dollars may now be the cheapest option. Check the currency selector before you pay rather than assuming Yen still wins.
To put the saving in context: at the 0.79p price, 200,000 Avios costs about £1,575. At a typical valuation of 1p per Avios, that is roughly £2,000 of flight value, so you are paying around 79% of face value. Our Avios Value Calculator will show you how that stacks up against your own redemption plans, and the Buy Avios Calculator lets you compare it with other promotions.
Who can buy Avios from Finnair Plus and how do you do it?
Check you already have a Finnair Plus account that existed on 30th October - you cannot open a new one to take part
Make sure the account holds at least 50 Avios. If it does not, transfer 50 across for free from your BA Club account via avios.com
Open the Finnair Plus buy points page and choose your currency, comparing the final price in each
Pay with a card that has 0% foreign exchange fees to get the lowest possible price
Once the Avios land, link your BA and Finnair Plus accounts and move them into your BA Club balance
The deal is most useful if you already have a specific redemption in mind, such as a long-haul premium cabin booking, where the cheaper cost per Avios makes the biggest difference.
What are the catches with buying Avios via Finnair?
You must have held a Finnair Plus account on 30th October, so new sign-ups are locked out
You need 50 Avios in the account before you can buy
Cards that charge a 2.99% foreign exchange fee will push the price slightly above 0.79p
Currensea debit cards do not earn points on points purchases because the spend is treated as cash-like, although it still counts towards renewal bonuses, sign-up bonuses and elite night credits. Business Currensea cards do earn points
Do not buy Avios speculatively. Only purchase what you will use soon, as Avios can be devalued and there is no refund
Can buying Avios earn Finnair Plus elite status?
This will matter to only some readers, but it is a genuine bonus. You earn 1 Finnair Plus tier point for every 10 Avios bought, so the maximum 200,000 Avios gives you up to 20,000 tier points.
Finnair Plus Silver (oneworld Ruby, BA Bronze equivalent): 15,000 tier points
Finnair Plus Gold (oneworld Sapphire, BA Silver equivalent): 45,000 tier points
Finnair Plus Platinum (oneworld Emerald, BA Gold equivalent): 80,000 tier points
Buying 150,000 Avios would be enough to trigger Silver status automatically. You can also swap Avios for tier points at 3:1, with caps of 7,500 tier points for Basic and Silver members, 22,500 for Gold and 40,000 for Platinum. How useful this is depends on where you are in your own Finnair Plus membership year.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to buy Avios from Finnair Plus?
With the 50% discount on 85,000+ Avios, 200,000 Avios costs 2,100 euros, about £1,752 or 0.88p each. Paying in a cheaper currency such as Yen at launch brought it down to roughly £1,575, or 0.79p each, though Finnair has since raised the Yen price.
Can I transfer Finnair Plus Avios to my British Airways account?
Yes. Link your BA Executive Club and Finnair Plus accounts and you can move the Avios across. The purchased Avios are credited to Finnair Plus first.
Can I open a new Finnair Plus account to get this deal?
No. You must already have had a Finnair Plus account on 30th October to take part, so opening one now will not work.
When does the Finnair Plus buy Avios offer end?
The promotion ends on 16th November, giving you just under two weeks from today.
The bottom line
A 50% discount on Avios is rare, and sub-0.90p pricing is the cheapest buy Avios offer we have seen in a long time. If you have a clear redemption planned, it is well worth a look, but only buy what you will actually use. The offer ends on 16th November, so check your eligibility and the currency price before then.
