✈️ Using Avios to Pay for British Airways Holidays

It's well known that you can use Avios for free flights and class upgrades, but what about paying for your holiday?

Holiday packages can either be flight + car hire or flight + accommodation.

You can use Avios in two main ways:

  • Part Payment with Avios: Use your Avios to lower the cash price of your holiday package.

  • Avios-Only Holidays: If you have a large Avios balance, you can book a holiday entirely using Avios.

Getting the Best Value from Your Avios

Avios holidays can often be a less lucrative way to use your Avios than booking an amazing redemption flight.

However, if you have a large Avios balance and you’re planning a holiday, there are ways to get more from your points.

  • Promotions: During holiday sales, you can get the same holiday for less Avios!

  • Off-Peak Travel: Less Avios are needed to fly during off-peak times.

  • Choose Your Payment Wisely: Depending on the cash price, Using Avios to pay the total amount might not always be the best value. Consider using Avios for a portion of the payment and cash for the rest.

My Avios balance is low at the moment, but if it were higher, the option to pay for the whole holiday would be available.

However, with 4,039 Avios, I could get £35 off the £149 Pisa holiday above, meaning I could spend two nights in Pisa and a return flight from Heathrow, including bags, for £119.

TIP: To see how much each Avios point is worth when booking flights, make sure you use the Smart Redemptions Extension.

🛫 British Airways Cancels Hundreds of New York Flights

All Gatwick to New York JFK flights have been cancelled from 12th December until at least March 2025 (probably April).

This is due to delays in the delivery of engines from Rolls-Royce.

There will be a very high demand for flights to JFK from Heathrow. If you’re planning to travel to New York during these dates, I advise you to book now!

If you can’t secure flights, remember you can also fly with airlines like Norse Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

There are also lots of indirect routes from Heathrow with airlines like TAP Air Portugal, Icelandair (a good stopover programme) and Aer Lingus (less UK air passenger duty!). Jetblue flies direct to JFK from Heathrow.

The issue also means that the new Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur route will be delayed from November 2024 until April 2025.

Current Redemption Availability from Heathrow to JFK

Looking at flight availability, most of the redemption seats have now sold out (although this is common for the Heathrow to JFK route).

An off-peak economy redemption is 25,000 Avios + £50 (16th January example). I can also see redemptions with American Airlines for 20,750 Avios + £290.50 off-peak (19th January).

Business class redemptions with BA off-peak are 80,000 Avios + £187.50 (16th January).

Final Words

That’s all for this week! We hope these tips help you maximise your travel rewards and have better experiences.
