Well, this one has been a long time coming. Philippine Airlines has been invited to join the oneworld alliance, with the news confirmed at the IATA Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro on 6 June 2026. PAL will become oneworld's 16th member airline, and the move is expected to complete next year.
If you've followed the points world for any length of time, you'll know PAL joining an alliance has been one of the longest-running "will they, won't they" sagas in the business. They flirted with oneworld accession years ago and never quite got there. So seeing the memorandum of understanding actually signed is genuinely a big deal.
But - and there's always a but - the framing in some of the early coverage is a touch more breathless than the facts warrant. Let me walk you through what's actually been announced, and then the bit that matters most: what it means for those of us hoarding Avios in the UK.
What's actually been announced
At the IATA AGM, the oneworld Governing Board formally invited Philippine Airlines to join the alliance. PAL signed a memorandum of understanding, with President Lucio C. Tan III calling it a "defining and transformative moment" for the carrier.

The important caveat - and this is the part I'd gently push back on the cheerier headlines about - is that PAL has been invited as a oneworld connect member, not a full member airline (at least initially). That distinction matters a lot for points collectors, so let's not skip over it.
The "oneworld connect" small print
oneworld connect is a lighter-touch tier of membership. It does not automatically come with the full suite of alliance-wide elite status benefits you'd get from a full member like Cathay Pacific or Japan Airlines.
In practice, connect membership typically delivers select benefits - things like priority check-in, priority boarding and baggage perks for elite members travelling on connect carriers - rather than the full reciprocal lounge access and status recognition across the board. The exact benefit set tends to depend on the bilateral relationships the connect carrier has with individual oneworld airlines.
So if you're a British Airways Club Gold member dreaming of strolling into a PAL lounge in Manila on the strength of your oneworld Emerald card, hold that thought. It may come, but it isn't guaranteed on day one, and "oneworld connect" is not the same as full membership. I'll update you as the finer detail emerges.
That said, the headline opportunity here isn't really about status. It's about redemptions.
Why this matters for UK Avios collectors
Here's the genuinely exciting part. Philippine Airlines flies a network that has historically been a nightmare to access with points - precisely because they weren't in any alliance and Mabuhay Miles isn't a transfer partner of any UK credit card.
PAL's long-haul map from Manila includes US gateways like Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Honolulu and Seattle, Australian cities including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Vancouver in Canada, plus Tokyo, Osaka and Seoul in North Asia. Add to that a deep regional network across Southeast Asia and one of the densest domestic networks in the region for island-hopping.
Award seat availability on PAL has long been quietly excellent - there's just been almost no good way to book it. Once they're properly integrated into oneworld, those seats should become bookable with Avios in a way they simply haven't been before. If you're already eyeing PAL redemptions, it's worth remembering you don't have to wait for the alliance integration. As I covered back in May, Qatar Airways Privilege Club added Philippine Airlines as an Avios partner from 1 June 2026, so there's already a route into PAL redemptions for Avios collectors right now. The oneworld move is the bigger, longer-term prize - but the Qatar tie-up is the one you can actually use today.
My honest take
Two things can be true at once. This is a meaningful, positive development that genuinely expands where UK Avios collectors can fly - and the "PAL joins oneworld!" headlines are running slightly ahead of the reality, because connect membership is a more modest thing than full membership.
What I'd actually do right now: nothing dramatic. The integration is a 2027 story, and the benefits will firm up over the coming months. If you want PAL seats sooner, the Qatar Avios route is your friend. And if you're sitting on a healthy Avios balance wondering whether to burn or hoard, this is one more small reason the "hoard a flexible balance" camp keeps winning - the redemption map keeps getting bigger.
It's also worth noting the broader pattern. oneworld has been on a growth tear - Fiji Airways and Oman Air came in, Hawaiian Airlines is joining off the back of the Alaska acquisition (I wrote a full breakdown of the Hawaiian oneworld move here), and now PAL. For Avios collectors, more members means more places to spend. That's the trend that matters.
