Qatar Airways Offers 60% Bonus on Avios Purchases - But There's a Better Option
A flash sale running until 2nd February, but BA's boost offer provides better value at 0.92p per Avios
Qatar Airways has just launched an interesting flash sale on Avios purchases, offering up to a 60% bonus when you buy 60,000 Avios or more through their Privilege Club programme. However, while this offer runs until 2nd February 2025, there's currently a more compelling option available through British Airways.
Using our Avios Balance Booster Calculator, we can see that British Airways is offering significantly better value with their current boost promotion:
BA 3x boost: 0.92p per Avios (best value)
BA 4x boost: 0.92p per Avios
BA 2x boost: 0.94p per Avios
What makes the BA offer particularly special is that you can currently boost ALL your 2024 Avios earnings - not just the last 30 days as usual. If you earned at least 75,000 qualifying Avios in 2024, you can buy up to 300,000 Avios at just 0.92p each, making Qatar's offer of 1.09p per Avios significantly less attractive in comparison.
The Qatar Airways Offer Details
The bonus structure appears to be tiered, with some members seeing different offers:
Up to 60% bonus when buying 60,000+ Avios (most common offer)
Some members are seeing a 50% bonus instead
The maximum purchase allowed is 250,000 Avios (plus bonus)
Important Considerations
If you're considering either offer, here are some key points:
For Qatar Airways:
You need prior activity in your Qatar Airways Privilege Club account
The Avios will be credited to your Qatar Airways account first
You can transfer them to British Airways Executive Club by linking your accounts
An American Express Membership Rewards transfer of 1,000 points counts as qualifying activity
For British Airways Boost:
You can boost up to 300,000 Avios at the best rate of 0.92p
The boost is based on your 2024 earning activity (not just the usual 30 days)
Higher multipliers (above 300,000 Avios) increase the cost per Avios significantly
My Recommendation
I'd strongly recommend checking our Avios Balance Booster Calculator to compare all your options, but here's my take: If you have access to the BA boost offer, that's clearly the better choice at 0.92p per Avios versus Qatar's 1.09p.
However, if you've already maximised your BA boost allocation or don't have access to it, the Qatar offer could be worth considering if you have a specific redemption in mind. I typically aim to get at least 1.2p-1.4p value per Avios when redeeming, so there's still potential for decent value here.
My Personal Strategy
If you're planning a specific redemption and need to top up your balance quickly, consider the BA boost first if available, and then look at the Qatar Airways offer as a backup option. Just remember to factor in the transfer time from Qatar Airways to British Airways if you're planning to use the Avios with BA.
