The discount applies when your itinerary starts or ends in one of the eligible cities listed below. You do not need to fly point-to-point between two qualifying cities - you just need one end of the trip to qualify. That opens up some clever routing options, which we will come to in a moment.

Here is where it gets interesting. Qatar Airways allows you to originate in any qualifying city - so you are not limited to UK departures. Bucharest is on the business class list, which means you can fly Bucharest-Doha-Sydney (or almost any other long-haul destination) in business class at a 25% Avios discount - even though Australia itself is not a qualifying city. The only cash outlay is a cheap positioning flight or train to Bucharest, which is often far less than the Avios saving on a long-haul business class seat.

For example, a Birmingham to Abu Dhabi routing in business class qualifies because Abu Dhabi is on the list. Note that the final Doha-Abu Dhabi leg would book into First Class on Qatar Airways, as there is no business class on those short regional hops - something to be aware of when reviewing your itinerary.

Qatar Airways Avios pricing is already materially lower than British Airways on many long-haul routes. A business class redemption from Europe to the Gulf or South-East Asia can run significantly fewer Avios than the equivalent BA award. Apply a 25% discount on top and the gap widens further. As a rough illustration: if a standard Qatar Airways Avios price for a business class return from London to Colombo is around 100,000 Avios, a 25% discount brings that down to approximately 75,000 Avios - a saving of 25,000 Avios. This is the part that trips people up. You cannot book these discounted Avios seats through ba.com - British Airways will simply charge you the standard Avios rate. To access the sale pricing, you need to book directly through the Qatar Airways Privilege Club portal. If your Avios are sitting in a British Airways account, you can transfer them across using the 'Move Avios' facility, which links your BA Executive Club and Qatar Privilege Club accounts.

Once your accounts are linked, your Avios balance transfers across and you can then search for and book the discounted seats on the Qatar Airways website. The deals page is the best place to start when searching for qualifying routes and dates.

There are a few genuine catches here that are worth knowing upfront, rather than after you have transferred your Avios across.

The restriction on booking for other people is the most impactful. If you want to book for a partner or family member and have not yet credited a cash flight to your Qatar account, do this as soon as possible - even a short BA domestic flight credited to your Qatar account should satisfy the requirement for future bookings.
