One status can open the door to several more (illustrative image)
A status match is the closest thing the loyalty world has to a free upgrade. You show one programme the elite status you hold somewhere else, and it gives you a similar tier. Award Travel Finder keeps a live list of every open status match offer, and at any point there are usually more than a dozen running.
I've used matches to go from one alliance to three, and I know how easy it is to waste your one shot on a quiet year. So this is the guide I wish I'd read first: what the different types are, the rules that catch people out, and how to time yours so it actually pays off.
AT A GLANCE
What
Getting elite status in one programme based on status you already hold in another
Who it's for
Anyone with airline or hotel status who is about to travel more with a different brand
Cost / value
Free for many matches and challenges; paid matches from under £100 to around £250+
The catch
Usually once per lifetime per programme, so timing is everything

Status match, status challenge or paid match - what's the difference?
WHAT // There are three flavours, and the names get used loosely, so it's worth being precise.
A straight status match gives you an equivalent tier as soon as you're approved. You upload proof of your current status, the programme checks it, and you get the new tier for a fixed period - usually around 12 months.
A status challenge gives you trial status and then asks you to earn it. Hilton Honors is the classic example: you're matched to Gold for 90 days, and if you stay 6 paid nights in that window you keep Gold (currently until 31 March 2028), while 12 nights upgrades you to Diamond.
A paid status match is a straight match with a fee attached. Most of these now run through a company called StatusMatch.com. The best-known one for UK readers is Flying Blue's campaign for BA members, which has charged £79 for Silver, £149 for Gold and £249 for Platinum.
Type | What you get | Typical cost | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
Straight match | Equivalent tier, straight away | Free | Lufthansa Miles & More for ITA Volare members |
Status challenge | Trial tier, earn it to keep it | Free | Hilton Honors Gold, 90 days |
Paid match | Equivalent tier, usually 12 months | About £70 to £260 | Flying Blue for BA Club members |
WHY IT MATTERS // Status isn't just lounges. Depending on the tier it means extra bags, priority check-in and boarding, free seat selection and, on the hotel side, breakfast and upgrades. And earning it the old-fashioned way has got harder: BA Silver now needs 7,500 tier points in a membership year, and since April 2025 tier points broadly follow what you spend. Plug a typical trip into our BA tier point calculator and you'll see why a match looks so tempting.

The rules that catch people out
It's usually once per lifetime. Flying Blue's terms say members approved for a status match won't be eligible for any later match. Hilton has long limited its challenge to members who haven't done one before (check the current terms, as the wording has changed over time). Malaysia Airlines Enrich allows one application per lifetime. Treat every match as a one-shot deal.
Matched status rarely counts for another match. StatusMatch.com's terms say it will decline any application where it believes the original status wasn't earned on merit through flying, or was "chain matched" from another programme. It may also refuse status that's temporary or from a challenge. So you can't usually hop from match to match to match.
Card-given status is a grey area. Hotel status that comes with a credit card is real status in the hotel's own system. Whether another programme will accept it for a match depends on its rules, so read the terms before you pay anything.
Paid fees are generally non-refundable. If you're declined for a rule you could have read in advance, don't expect your money back. Check eligibility (including where you live - many matches are limited by country of residence) before you pay.
Watch the currency. Lots of fees are charged in euros or US dollars - Lufthansa's co-pay for BA members, for example, is €99. Pay with a card that doesn't add a foreign transaction fee, such as Curve or Revolut, and check your plan's limits.

How to time a status match (and apply in five steps)
Start with the trip, not the offer. A 12-month match is worth most when it covers your busiest 12 months. If you've got a big trip in the spring, apply a few weeks before, not today "just in case".
Check your current status is live - and not about to go up. You can't usually upgrade a match later. If you're a few flights from the next tier, earn it first, then apply.
Read the eligibility rules. Which programmes are accepted, which tiers map to what, and which countries of residence qualify.
Get clean proof ready. A screenshot of your account showing your name, membership number, tier and expiry date. Your name needs to match across both accounts, and StatusMatch.com may ask for photo ID.
Apply, then set reminders. Approval can take anything from a few days to a couple of weeks. Once you're in, note the challenge deadline or expiry date in your calendar.
If you have no status at all, the quickest way in for most UK readers is a card. The Platinum Card from American Express comes with Hilton Honors Gold, Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite, Radisson Rewards Premium and MeliáRewards Gold - four hotel statuses for one fee. See the current Amex Platinum offer. My own Hilton Gold comes from the business version, the Amex Business Platinum.
💡 WHAT TO ACTUALLY DO
Have status already? Don't match it anywhere yet - pick the programme that fits your next 12 months and time it to a real trip. Status came from a match? Assume you can't use it again. No status? A card with built-in hotel status is the easiest first rung. See which matches are open right now.

My take
When BA moved The British Airways Club to revenue-based tier points, I was sitting on a BA Gold I'd flown hard for. Rather than let it fade, I used it. Flying Blue matched me to Platinum, Lufthansa matched me into Miles & More, and Virgin Atlantic matched me too (I've since settled at Silver there). I wrote up the whole thing in my BA Gold status match story.
What surprised me was how deliberate the airlines are about it. A status match is marketing money. Flying Blue said more than 4,000 BA members matched within three months of its first UK campaign - that's a lot of frequent flyers being invited to try a rival for a year. Airlines wouldn't do it if enough of us didn't end up switching for good.
That's the bit worth thinking about. Matched status is a trial, not a new home. You can only credit each flight to one programme, so holding three statuses doesn't mean you'll keep three. Use the year to find out which programme actually fits how you fly, then put your flying there. And never book a pricier flight just to protect a tier you got for free.

My verdict
Status matches are one of the best-value tools in the hobby, as long as you treat them as one-off chances. Start with the free matches and challenges, pay only when the trips are already in the diary, and assume matched status can't be recycled. If you get the timing right, a year of lounges, bags and upgrades for little or nothing is genuinely possible.
Once you've got your new status, put it to work: Award Travel Finder searches award seats across the alliances, and our lounge access finder shows which lounges your tier opens up.
