Smart With Points - UK Avios, points and travel

Well, I didn't see this one coming. easyJet has just announced it will offer onboard Wi-Fi for the first time, and it's going straight to Starlink. The rollout starts in the first half of 2027 and should cover the whole A320 family fleet by early 2028.

That's a big swing from an airline that, back in January, said the numbers didn't add up. Here's what we know, what we don't, and how it compares with KLM, Wizz Air and BA.

THE NEWS

easyJet goes online for the first time

WHAT // easyJet is partnering with SpaceX to fit Starlink across its A320, A320neo and A321neo fleet. That's a big job - easyJet has over 350 aircraft and carried 100 million passengers in 2025. Installs start in the first half of 2027, with the rollout due to finish by early 2028.

Once it's live, you'll be able to browse, stream and game on your own devices. easyJet also says you'll get flight status through its app and website, destination info (local weather, transport and tourism), and the option to order from the inflight menu from your seat.

CEO Kenton Jarvis said it brings "even greater choice and convenience when you fly with easyJet" and that "ultimately, it's yet another way we're making travel easy."

WHY IT MATTERS // easyJet is the airline a lot of us end up on for city breaks and short hops, often from regional airports where BA doesn't fly. Right now those flights are a total connectivity blackout. Starlink is low-orbit satellite internet, and on the airlines already using it, it's fast enough for video calls and streaming - a different world from the old, patchy inflight Wi-Fi.

It also matters because of who said no. In January, Kenton Jarvis told reporters easyJet had held talks with Starlink but the economics didn't add up for now. Nine months later, it's all in. Something changed - and I suspect it was watching rivals sign up.

THE CATCH

What easyJet hasn't told us yet

The press release is light on the details that actually decide whether this is good news for your wallet:

  • Price. There's no word on whether Wi-Fi will be free, paid, or bundled with something like easyJet Plus. Given easyJet's model, I'd be surprised if it's free for everyone - but that's my guess, not a fact.

  • Speed. easyJet calls Starlink "the fastest Wi-Fi in the sky" but gives no figures.

  • Which aircraft first. There's no aircraft-by-aircraft schedule, so for most of 2027 it'll be pot luck whether your plane has it.

Until easyJet publishes pricing, treat this as a 2027-2028 nice-to-have rather than a reason to book.

CONNECTING

How it compares with KLM, Wizz Air and BA

KLM. When I wrote about KLM's Starlink plans, the headline was the price: free for Flying Blue members in every cabin. But KLM's Starlink is long-haul only, starting mid-2027. Its European flights stay on Viasat (free for Flying Blue members on most of the short-haul fleet since January 2026). easyJet is the opposite - short-haul Starlink, but no price yet. If easyJet wants to win the comparison, it needs a free or near-free option.

Wizz Air. Wizz signed its Starlink deal in June, also from 2027, and also without saying what it'll charge. At the time it was the first European low-cost airline to commit, with easyJet and Ryanair holding back. Now easyJet has followed, Ryanair looks like the odd one out.

BA. BA has been on its own Starlink journey - catch up with BA's first Starlink flight. For anyone weighing up the two short-haul options, my easyJet Plus vs British Airways Club comparison is worth a read.

💡 WHAT TO ACTUALLY DO

Nothing changes today. Don't pay more for an easyJet fare expecting Wi-Fi - nothing is fitted until 2027.

Need to stay online abroad now? A travel eSIM is still the cheapest fix once you land - I use Airalo.

If free Wi-Fi matters to you, join Flying Blue (it's free) - KLM already gives members free Wi-Fi on most European flights.

MY TAKE

My take

I'll be honest - a three-hour flight with no signal is one of the few times I actually switch off, and part of me will miss that. But for business travellers, parents with restless kids, and anyone who has missed a gate change email, this is a proper upgrade.

What I find most interesting is the U-turn. In January easyJet said the economics didn't work. Since then Wizz Air has committed, and Starlink has kept spreading across the airlines we cover. When the biggest low-cost players start fitting it, onboard internet stops being a perk and starts being expected - and that puts pressure on everyone, including BA on short haul.

The real test is price. KLM has set a high bar by making it free for loyalty members. If easyJet charges £10 a flight, most people will shrug. If it's free or folded into easyJet Plus, it becomes a real reason to pick orange over blue.

MY VERDICT

My verdict

Good news, with a big question mark. easyJet going from zero Wi-Fi to Starlink is a huge leap, and the 2027-2028 timeline is quick for a fleet of over 350 aircraft. But until we see pricing, it's impossible to say whether it's a game-changer or just another add-on at checkout.

I'll update this piece when easyJet confirms pricing and the first aircraft go live. Follow along on Instagram for the latest.
