Malaysia Airlines has just widened its paid Enrich status match, and this time UK residents are on the list. If you hold elite status with Lufthansa Group's Miles & More, Korean Air, Asiana or Vietnam Airlines, you can now pay to match into Enrich - which means oneworld Ruby for $89, oneworld Sapphire for $199 or oneworld Emerald for $349.

That is a big deal for one group in particular: UK-based Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian frequent flyers who have never had a cheap way into oneworld. But there's a rule buried in the small print that will knock out a lot of people reading this - including me. Let's go through it.

THE NEWS

What Malaysia Airlines is offering

WHAT // Enrich, the Malaysia Airlines loyalty programme, first opened this match in July for Air India and Garuda Indonesia elites. It has now added Korean Air SKYPASS, Asiana Club, Vietnam Airlines Lotusmiles and Lufthansa Group Miles & More, and the list of eligible countries of residence now includes the United Kingdom. The match is run by StatusMatch.com, the same platform behind the Flying Blue and Vietnam Airlines matches we've covered before.

Here's how the Lufthansa Group tiers map across, with the fee for each:

Silver

Ruby

$89

Senator

Gold

Sapphire

$199

HON Circle

Platinum

Emerald

$349

The other programmes follow the same pattern: Korean Air Morning Calm Club, Select and Premium (or Million Miler) map to Silver, Gold and Platinum; Asiana Gold, Diamond and Diamond Plus/Platinum do the same; and Vietnam Airlines Titanium, Gold and Platinum line up the same way. The full matrix is on the Enrich FAQ.

WHY IT MATTERS // Paid status matches into oneworld have usually been aimed at BA members - think of the Royal Air Maroc match. This one goes the other way. It recruits Star Alliance and SkyTeam regulars, and it gives a UK Lufthansa Senator a way to get oneworld Sapphire lounge access on BA without flying a single BA sector.

THE MATHS

What £149 of oneworld Sapphire actually gets you

Let's put the Gold match into BA terms, because that's how most of us think. Enrich Gold is oneworld Sapphire, which is the same alliance tier as BA Silver. To earn BA Silver yourself you now need 7,500 tier points in a membership year (or 50 BA-coded flights), and since the April 2025 changes tier points broadly track what you spend. Our BA tier point calculator will show you how far a typical trip gets you - for most people, it's a long way off £149.

Sapphire is not the same as BA Silver, mind. You get the alliance benefits - business lounges when you fly oneworld (including BA short-haul in economy), priority check-in and boarding, and extra baggage - but not BA-specific perks like free seat selection or BA's Silver earning bonuses. Check which lounges you'd get on your usual routes with our lounge access finder.

The Platinum match is the more eye-catching one. Enrich Platinum is oneworld Emerald, which opens up first class lounges (the Galleries First lounges at Heathrow, for example) and fast track at selected airports. But you can only get it if you already hold HON Circle, Morning Calm Premium, Asiana Diamond Plus/Platinum, Lotusmiles Platinum, or Air India/Garuda Platinum. If you're HON Circle, you probably don't need me to tell you lounges are nice.

One small thing on payment: the fee is charged in US dollars. At today's rate that's about £67, £149 or £261, but a card with a non-sterling fee will add a few pounds on top. I'd pay with something that doesn't charge one - Curve or Revolut both work well for this, just check your plan's fee-free limits.

THE CATCH

The catches (there are a few)

Matched status doesn't count. This is the big one. StatusMatch.com's terms say it will decline any application where it believes the original status wasn't earned on merit through flying, or was "chain matched" from another programme. If your Senator came from the Lufthansa match for BA Gold members earlier this year, expect to be turned down.

One shot, 12 months. You get one Enrich status match per lifetime. The status lasts 12 consecutive months from approval, then you fall back to whatever you've earned. Approved fees are non-refundable, and you can't upgrade the match later - so if your current status is about to go up a tier, wait until it shows before you apply.

Keeping it is hard from the UK. Enrich's 2026 update set the Elite Points needed for 2027 at 35 for Silver, 70 for Gold and 140 for Platinum, earned in a calendar year from Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and oneworld flights credited to Enrich. (The status match FAQ's worked example uses 40 for Silver, so check the current figure before you plan around it.) Crediting your oneworld flights to Enrich means not crediting them to BA, so you'd be trading tier points and Avios for a shot at keeping Enrich status.

Other small print. You must not be a Malaysian national, you need an Enrich account in good standing, the Platinum companion card is excluded for matched Platinum members, and your membership card is digital only, via the Malaysia Airlines app.

💡 WHAT TO ACTUALLY DO

Earned Senator or HON Circle and a oneworld-heavy year ahead? Apply - $199 for Sapphire is cheap. Status came from a match? Don't waste the fee. Time it: apply just before your busiest 12 months of travel, not now "just in case". Check your eligibility here.

MY TAKE

My take

I'll be honest - my first thought was "brilliant, I'm Miles & More Senator". Then I remembered how I got it. As I wrote in my BA Gold status match story, my Lufthansa status came from a match, not from flying Lufthansa. That's exactly what the chain-match rule is there to stop, so I'm sitting this one out. If you're in the same boat, I'd save your $199.

What I find interesting is the direction of travel. Airlines used to guard their elite tiers. Now they're openly poaching each other's best customers, and charging for the privilege. Malaysia Airlines is fishing in Star Alliance and SkyTeam ponds, and Miles & More has its own reasons to want Enrich elites on side. Each side clearly thinks the other's frequent flyers are worth having. For us, that means more doors - as long as the status you walk in with is genuinely yours.

The other thing worth thinking about is what you're really buying. A match is a 12-month trial, not a new home. For a UK-based flyer, keeping Enrich Gold means routing a lot of long-haul flying through Enrich rather than BA. That only makes sense if you fly to Asia often or you're not that attached to BA. For everyone else, the honest way to see this is as a year of oneworld lounges for £149 - which, if you've got a few trips booked, is a pretty good year.

MY VERDICT

My verdict

If you live in the UK, earned your Senator (or Korean Air or Vietnam Airlines Gold) by flying, and you've got several oneworld trips in the next year, the $199 Gold match is one of the cheapest routes into oneworld Sapphire I've seen. HON Circle members can get Emerald for $349, which is a no-brainer if you'll use it.

If your status came from another match, or you won't fly oneworld much in the next 12 months, skip it - you only get one go, so don't spend it on a quiet year. I'll update this piece if the eligible countries or the matrix change. You can also find award seats on Malaysia Airlines and the rest of oneworld with Award Travel Finder.
